Department of Neurology Headache Program

Care for frequent headaches in children and young adults

The Headache Program within the Department of Neurology at Boston Children’s Hospital specializes in caring for children and young adults with frequent headaches. Our team of specialists is highly skilled in diagnosing, managing, and treating a wide range of pediatric headaches and understanding their causes. Our goal is to help empower our patients to manage their headaches effectively to improve their quality of life.

How we approach pediatric headaches

Our approach to managing headaches in children and young adults starts with a thorough evaluation by one of our experienced headache specialists. We work closely with you and your child to identify the most effective treatment plan, which may include lifestyle changes, medication, and complementary therapies such as acupuncture, biofeedback, and mindfulness. For those who need it, our infusion clinic provides specialized IV therapy for fast, effective relief without the need for an emergency room visit. For children with more complex needs—including headaches that interfere with daily activities—we collaborate closely with other departments at Boston Children’s, such as the Chronic Headache Program in Pain Medicine, the Department of Anesthesiology, and Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences to ensure a comprehensive and personalized approach to care.

We also coordinate with your child’s primary care provider to ensure a seamless and comprehensive approach to managing your child’s headaches.
